A very late mix of some great road trip songs! I’ll probably be burning through most of my iTunes library on this trip, but there are some rules I have for what makes a great road trip song:

1. Singable. It’s so much more fun if you can’t the resist the urge to belt the song out the car windows!2. Recognizable. It’s no fun if you’re the only person in the car who recognizes 90% of what’s playing. 3. Upbeat. This is somewhat debatable, but generally I like my roadtrip songs upbeat. I don’t want to fall asleep behind the wheel.

What are your road trip rules and some of your favorite road trip songs?

Here’s Part II of my holiday mix! While I love the Christmas classics, there are always a ton of great new original holiday songs, or covers that I love. Here are a few of my favorites! And here’s a non-rhetorical question — do you guys consider Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” a classic? It’s not exactly new, but it’s not old enough for me to file it amongst Bing and Phil Spector’s Christmas album.

You can check out my holiday mixes from last year here: #34 & #35

Hello! (The photo above was taken out in Culver City last week. I have no idea what this store sells, but I sure do love the name and sign!) Last night I watched the PBS Documentary “Masters of American Music” on Billie Holiday, so it put me in a bit of a jazz mood. I’ve done a couple jazz mixtapes before (#17 & #32) but you can never have enough! Started off with some Lady Day and ended with some Count Basie and Sammy Nestico (who arranged a lot of Basie’s music back in the day). Actually, the album that “There Will Be Another You” came from, is one of my favorite Count Basie records — “On The Road”. You guys should definitely check it out!

Hope everyone had a great Labor Day. I’ve been busying remodeling the bathroom, which is why I’ve been MIA on Tumblr lately.

A few months ago, my friend Joyce and I were talking about the music we listened to in high school. I think people get surprised by the fact I listened to so much ska back in the day. (No really, I did. I still have a very special place in my heart for it.) This week I thought I should make a mixtape of some of the albums that remind me of high school. Note: while most of these are albums that came out while I was in high school, some (like The Blue Album) were ones I discovered while in high school. Obviously, a lot missing, but I think it’s a pretty fair mix of CDs I constantly had in my backpack, along with my CD player and headphones.

Oh man! Remember portable CD players?

(I took the photo above at the Art In The Streets exhibit at MOCA, when my brother was in town.)

Everyone needs a summer playlist. I’ve posted a few before (#05, #07, #16), but those are a bit older. This week’s mix include songs that have been on my summer playlist. (I took the picture a month or so ago when I was driving up the 101 to Monterey. It was mostly a fluke picture, but thought it turned out kinda nicely.)

Having a bit of trouble with the new iTunes and my external hard drive. Will post when I get a chance, if not later today, tomorrow!

Whoops! Just as I got back on the wagon… I slipped right back off again. Sorry to miss last week’s mixtape! A bit of a random mix this week, it starts off with a singer-songwriter, and before the mix is over, we’re hammered by the pop-punk stylings of Chapel Hill vetrans, Superchunk. I really have no explanation except that I have been loving all these songs (and playing them on repeat) recently. Hopefully you’ll find something you like by the end!

The “album art” is a shot I took while I was in Portland a few weeks ago — no, not in the forest. I took it at the bar at Doug Fir.
