East London shop shutters painted by Eine
I’ve been invited to give a PechaKucha style presentation next week and in the five minute slot I’ll be running through the Type Worship’s journey and some of my work. I’ll be covering some of the designers and artists that have inspired me and have been collecting together some materials.
I came across this brilliant photograph capturing Ben Flynn’s work (aka Eine), which was one of the original things that got me started.Matthew Lloyd/Getty Images Europe
Love his work.
Daunt Books is arguably the most beautiful bookshop in London. (photo by Olly Denton)
AH! One of my favorite bookshops in the world. This was just down the road from where I lived when I studied abroad. Fantastic little place, whenever I visit London I make a special effort to stop in here and buy something new to read.
I was lucky enough to be studying in London when Carsten Höller’s “Test Site” (a.k.a. the slides) was on exhibit as part of the Unilver Series at the Tate Modern. It was one of the most fun and interactive exhibits I’d seen and experienced in a museum, and sort of changed what I perceived as “art”. I was a little bummed to have just missed being in New York for his exhibition at the New Museum. If any of you New Yorkers are reading this, go check it out and report back to me!
100 years of East London style in 100 seconds.
I love this.
A Sony distribution warehouse in North London was burned to the ground around 4:00 a.m. GMT this morning during the third straight night of riots in the UK, as the BBC reports. The 200,000 square-foot center housed the entire inventory of PIAS UK, the primary distribution hub for more than 150 independent labels.
No injuries were reported in the blaze, but all inventory is feared lost. XL/Beggars, Warp, Rough Trade, Domino, 4AD, Sub Pop, Secretly Canadian, Jagjaguwar, Drag City, Thrill Jockey, FatCat, Kompakt, Mute, Ninja Tune, Vice, and Soul Jazz are among those affected.
Prior to the blaze, the manager of Rough Trade East Tweeted that Trumans Brewery, the arts and media quarter that houses the store, was on lockdown and that the store had to be closed “as a precaution to ensure staff and customers can get home safe tonight.” Today, Rough Trade is encouraging customers to assist in cleanup around the city.
