Holly Miranda - “Ex-Factor” (Lauryn Hill cover) Live at Zebulon
A few months ago, my friend Joyce and I were talking about the music we listened to in high school. I think people get surprised by the fact I listened to so much ska back in the day. (No really, I did. I still have a very special place in my heart for it.) This week I thought I should make a mixtape of some of the albums that remind me of high school. Note: while most of these are albums that came out while I was in high school, some (like The Blue Album) were ones I discovered while in high school. Obviously, a lot missing, but I think it’s a pretty fair mix of CDs I constantly had in my backpack, along with my CD player and headphones.
Oh man! Remember portable CD players?
(I took the photo above at the Art In The Streets exhibit at MOCA, when my brother was in town.)

I love this movie.
Who doesn’t love a cover? Feels like forever since I’ve posted a covers mixtape — it kicks off with one of my favorite new covers, Mayer Hawthorne’s take on ELO’s “Mr. Blue Sky”. This is pretty much been my summer jam so far. (And yes, that is a cover of Justin Bieber’s “Baby” by Neon Trees. Just listen to it; they get extra points for inserting Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me” instead of the ridiculous rapping part in the middle.)
And you may have seen that photo before, I took it last week on Instagram. (If you’re on Instagram, come find me. My user name is: mlee525)

Girlfriend, let me break it down for you again
You know I only say it ‘cause I’m truly genuine

Happy Monday everyone! Starting off this mix is that ubiquitous summer jam, “All Summer” by Kid Cudi, Best Coast & Rostam Batmanglij. I don’t care if it was released as part of a Converse campaign — I really love this song. Also throwing in the newly surfaced Lauryn Hill track “Repercussions” because I love that one too. A sort of random mix, but hope you guys dig it!
(Just FYI, the picture is of an awesome record and instrument shop in San Francisco. Previously seen here. Reblog if you love records! :P )

You guys might have already heard this, since this track surfaced on teh interwebz over the weekend, but I’ve been playing it non-stop so I’m posting it now. Seriously, it doesn’t matter that it’s not confirmed whether it’s an unreleased track or a new recording — ZOMG I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS.
See I was born into this world,
In another space and time.
Time has moved on and death has grown closer,
Surely has blown my mind.
Ain’t that a bitch?
The way the world spins around
Everything that I said and I did,
Surely came back around.
