Who doesn’t love a cover? Feels like forever since I’ve posted a covers mixtape — it kicks off with one of my favorite new covers, Mayer Hawthorne’s take on ELO’s “Mr. Blue Sky”. This is pretty much been my summer jam so far. (And yes, that is a cover of Justin Bieber’s “Baby” by Neon Trees. Just listen to it; they get extra points for inserting Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me” instead of the ridiculous rapping part in the middle.)

And you may have seen that photo before, I took it last week on Instagram. (If you’re on Instagram, come find me. My user name is: mlee525)

If you are worried about “lamestreamers” liking your favorite bands, you are 12. If you’re as cool as you think you are, you already saw them play intimate sets in small venues — you got your chance. Now let everybody else.

Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels) - Arcade Fire

Tonight’s Grammy performance was all sizzle and no steak, but that’s okay. I just had to go back and play a few old favorites. Even after a half decade, I can’t listen to this song all the way through without getting tears in my eyes.

Major congrats to Arcade Fire! I didn’t watch the Grammys, but catching up via Twitter & Tumblr was probably the better choice anyway.

Related: Who is Arcade Fire? is a Tumblr worth looking at for some LULZ.

Happy… Tuesday? Haha, whoops. Looks like the new year’s Mixtape Mondays are already all over the place. Anyway, hope the tunes on this week’s mix are worth the wait! Mostly older stuff, except “Civilian” which is from the upcoming Wye Oak record.

The photo was taken on the way back to LA from San Diego this past weekend. Driving is nice, but next time I’m gonna look into how long a train ride would be. (And no, I didn’t take the photo whilst driving. My brother was driving and I was testing out some photo apps I have on my phone: Andigraf and Instagram)

John Legend & The Roots - “Wake Up” (Arcade Fire cover)

I’m a couple days behind on this, but I’m posting it anyway. Why? Because I love covers, and John Legend, and the Roots, and Arcade Fire.

You can download an mp3 of it here (via Stereogum)

Happy Monday! Lots of oddly danceable tracks on this week’s mix! I included 3 of my new favorite songs: the RAC mix of Edward Sharpe’s “Janglin”, “Young Blood” by The Naked and Famous, and the ubiquitous “Fuck You” by Cee-Lo.

For everyone wondering, the photo was taken in (surprise, surprise) Downtown LA! Next week I will endeavor to take a picture that’s not in Downtown.

Happy Monday! So over the weekend I rewatched Scott Pilgrim vs. The World with my buddy and got excited (again) about the use of Metric’s “Black Sheep” in the movie. (For those wondering, it’s the song that Envy Adams’ band, The Clash at Demonhead, play at Lee’s Palace.) Anyway, it got me thinking about all the Canadian bands I really love, so this week’s mix is full of bands from The Great White North!

I really do love Canada. And I’m not just saying that because most of my family is from Toronto. I mean, what’s not to love? Universal healthcare, Tim Hortons, hockey, maple leaves, curling, poutine and milk in a bag! I mean, minus their frigid winters, it’s a pretty lovely place.

Oh, and the photo was taken at Seven Grand in Downtown LA.

Happy Monday! Props to my friend Joyce for the Cults and The Love Language suggestions. Both are excellent tracks! Also yea, I did put in “Bruises” by Chairlift in there. I really like that song, even if I always think of iPods when I hear it. This is the version from their 2007 self-release album Daylight Savings. The photo is from Saturday’s kick off of LA’s Chinatown Summer Nights, which goes on every Saturday this month!

You always seemed so sure
That one day we’d fight in,
In a suburban world
